Ford Expedition Trim Levels: Which One Is Right for You?
Shopping the Ford Expedition lineup used to mean sorting through XL, XLT, Limited, Timberline, King Ranch, and Platinum trims. That’s no longer the case. Since the Expedition’s 2025 redesign carried into the current 2026 model year Ford simplified the lineup down to four trims: Active, Platinum, Tremor, and King Ranch, priced from roughly $62,400 up to $84,060 before destination charges. Here’s exactly what each trim offers, and how they map to the old naming if you’ve been researching Expeditions for a while.
2026 Ford Expedition Trim Lineup at a Glance
| Trim | Starting MSRP* | Positioning |
|---|---|---|
| Active | $62,400 | Value-focused entry point |
| Platinum | $73,950 | Comfort and luxury upgrade |
| Tremor | $81,400 | Off-road capability |
| King Ranch | $84,060 | Top-of-the-line luxury |
*Excludes destination charge (approximately $2,595) and options. Active, Platinum, and King Ranch are also available in the extended-length Expedition MAX body style.
What Happened to XL, XLT, Limited, and Timberline?
If you’re seeing “Expedition XL vs. XLT” or “Expedition Limited vs. King Ranch” in your research and can’t find those trims on a current Expedition build page, that’s because Ford discontinued those names as part of the 2025 redesign. Here’s how the old lineup maps to the current one:
- XL and XLT → Active. The old entry-level XL and mid-level XLT trims were consolidated into a single, well-equipped Active trim. Ford’s reasoning was straightforward: rather than offering a stripped-down base model, the new Active comes standard with more technology and safety equipment than the old XLT did, closing the gap that used to exist between trims.
- Limited → Platinum and King Ranch. The Limited trim, which used to sit just below Platinum, was folded into a two-trim upper tier. Platinum and King Ranch now cover the territory the Limited used to occupy, each adding its own distinct take on premium materials and features rather than one generic “step-up” trim.
- Timberline → Tremor. Ford’s off-road Timberline package (introduced for the 2022 model year) never quite caught on with shoppers, so for 2025 it was replaced by the Tremor name — the same off-road sub-brand Ford already uses on the F-150 and other trucks. The Tremor is a more capable successor, not just a rename, adding the high-output engine as standard equipment.
If you’re comparing a used Expedition Limited or Timberline against a new Platinum or Tremor, you’re really comparing model generations as much as trim levels, so expect meaningful differences in technology and standard features on top of the naming change.
Active: The Value-Focused Entry Point
The Active trim is where most Expedition shoppers should start, and Ford has made it a strong baseline rather than a bare-bones trim. Standard equipment includes the 400-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, a 10-speed automatic transmission, Ford Co-Pilot360 Active 2.0 (Ford’s suite of driver-assist safety features), and depending on model year a trial of BlueCruise hands-free highway driving. The Active is also the only trim that offers a standard 8-passenger bench-seat configuration in the second row, making it the trim to choose if maximum seating capacity matters more to you than captain’s-chair comfort.
Platinum: Comfort and Luxury Upgrade
Stepping up to Platinum brings heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row captain’s chairs, fixed running boards, a panoramic sunroof, and a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. This is the trim aimed at buyers who want a genuinely upscale daily driver without going all-in on the top-tier styling of the King Ranch. Platinum can also be optioned with the Platinum Ultimate Package, which brings the interior feature content close to King Ranch levels without the King Ranch’s brand-specific leather trim.
Tremor: Built for Off-Road Capability
The Tremor is the Expedition’s off-road specialist, standard with the high-output 440-horsepower version of the EcoBoost V6, an electronic locking rear differential, 33-inch all-terrain tires, underbody skid plates, front tow hooks, and a lifted suspension with roughly 10.4 inches of ground clearance. It also carries over Platinum-level comfort features, so you’re not sacrificing interior refinement to get genuine trail capability. Tremor is only offered in the standard-length body style; it’s not available as an Expedition MAX.
King Ranch: Top-of-the-Line Luxury
King Ranch is the flagship trim, distinguished by exclusive two-tone leather upholstery, unique interior trim, bronze-painted 22-inch wheels, power-deployable running boards, and an upgraded Bang & Olufsen Unleashed sound system. It also includes an adaptive suspension for a smoother ride at the top price point in the lineup. One important note: King Ranch is captain’s-chairs-only in the second row if you need 8-passenger seating, this is not the trim to choose, regardless of options.
Expedition vs. Expedition MAX: Does Trim Choice Affect Length?
The extended-length Expedition MAX adds roughly 9 to 12 inches of overall length (depending on the specific measurement used) and significantly more cargo volume behind the third row, without adding extra passenger space. MAX is available on Active, Platinum, and King Ranch trims for an additional cost, but it is not offered on the Tremor if off-road capability is your priority, you’ll be choosing the standard-length body.
Which Trim Is Right for You?
- Choose Active if you want the best value and the option of 8-passenger seating.
- Choose Platinum if daily comfort and upscale features matter more than maximum seating flexibility.
- Choose Tremor if you actually plan to use the Expedition off-road or want the most rugged, capable version.
- Choose King Ranch if you want the most distinctive styling and top-shelf materials, and you’re fine with captain’s chairs limiting you to 7 passengers.
Trim decisions get easier once you’ve sat in each configuration and compared them side by side; spec sheets only tell part of the story.
